Color My World Studio

Hand Colored Photo Information

The art of handcolored photographs originated approximately 150 years ago. At the inception of the wonderful world of photography, only black and white images were available. Some of them were eventually sepia toned. Think of photographs around the time of the Civil War, as these were some of the very first photographs. These have survived the test of time.

Sometime later, studio artists began to add oils to these photographs, especially for skintones on portraits. They began a new wave of color enhanced black and white photographs. Well, things have come a long way in the world of photography. Today the art of handcolored portraits is almost lost. But here at Color My World Studio, we still create these original portraits by hand. Each portrait is captured on film, printed on special paper, and then painted by hand. (Yes, I actually sit down, mix my oils, and paint and blend each photograph.) The result is a breathtakingly beautiful portrait that is soft and ethereal.

In addition to being unique, they are extremely durable…projected to last 200-300 years. Many clients create these of their children and pass them down through the generations. They are treasured keepsakes that will stand the test of time.

We discuss clothing selection and location at length to create a timeless backdrop for your family portraits. Antique lace dresses, sun hats, umbrellas, denim, teddy bears and your own family pet, all add to the warmth and character of your family portraits.
