What To Wear For Your Family Pictures

Clothing

Choose a style of clothing that reflects your family’s taste. Are you a jeans and t-shirt family? Are khakis and button-down shirt more your taste? Love to mix things up with pattern? Any of these looks are great because they are comfortable to YOU! So be true to yourself and your portraits will reflect your own style and taste. You will also feel more comfortable in your style.

I do think that shoes add or can detract from your family portrait. Barefoot or dark shoes/sandals are always a good choice to blend in with the setting. Big, white, out-of-this-world sneakers are great, but not so much in portraits. Unless we are shooting an ad for Jordan’s, leave the sneakers for another time.

In general, I recommend parents dress fashionably, yet simple, and focus more of the fun, funky, unique style on the kids. If you have 5 people all dressing in lots of layers and accessories, it can be a bit overwhelming. Dark jeans that have a grit to them are usually a good choice, as they add texture and are slimming.

Kids

We expect to take breaks when we work with little ones. It helps to have full tummies in them and have snacks on-board for emergency fuel. Also have a change of clothes on hand, just-in-case. Even your best-laid plans sometimes need a Plan B.

Make-Up

Make-up should be a bit more plumped up than your usual wear. You want to look rested and healthy, so adding a bit of cheek and lip color will enhance your vibrancy. Avoid glimmer and shimmer and shine, as it photographs poorly. Make sure that your nails look good and that all kids avoid the chipped nail polish look. Having a French Manicure or sheer polish elongates your fingers and adds a touch of elegance to your image.

For Men Only

You may want to shave just prior to your session if you are likely to have a 5 o’clock shadow. If you sport a goat-tee, trim up all of those loose ends. Your facial hair should look crisp and clean.
